star_3An introduction to Fitness Business Television, How to keep members and clients longer, a killer custom video resource, and what’s working in our fitness businesses right now

Websites and Resources Mentioned in the Show:

Our industry is loaded with issues.  From the fact that we haven’t increased our prices to keep up with inflation to poor goal setting and ineffective marketing, we have plenty of room to improve.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.  FitBiz TV was created to help you solve a lot of these problems.  And the best part?  You get to be involved.  That’s right…whenever you have something important to contribute, or you agree or disagree with what I say, you get to leave a comment.  Everyone will benefit from what you have to say.

Give the show a chance to grow.  You’ll notice there isn’t a lot of music or cool transitions…just a whole lot of me, which can get boring.  So I’ll add some cool stuff in future episodes

Our question for this week outlines the issue of heavy competition in your market and the little things you can do to keep people interested in you and keep them from leaving you for another fitness business.

This week’s Killer Resource is a cool custom video service that allows you to post your pictures and videos and it automatically turns them into a cool slide show video with special effects.  I recommend upgrading to the all inclusive package at only $30 a year.  You can put your videos on your website or on other websites such as Youtube.  AND…You get your first introduction to my son MJ!

I wrap up the show with a list of fitness marketing strategies that are working in our health clubs right now.  Typically this section of the show will highlight one specific strategy, but for the first episode (especially since we’re heading into the new year), I wanted to discuss some of the things that we’re going to be utilizing next month.

Let me know your opinion about the topics covered in the show this week – leave your comment below, it’s really easy to do.

Enjoy the show!

      Great first show!!

    • Sonja

Lots of great, useable info! I’m going to the video builder site right now!
Didn’t know Curtis was so good-looking!
I’ll watch this every week! Thanks!

    • Jamie Goff

With all the hype I was afraid I’d be disappointed. That is really cool and I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into the show.

I didn’t care for the last orange backdrop that had the swirls. But other than that, I loved it. Very well done!

And I am excited to try the animoto video service. I can’t wait til next week’s show!

      Boom goes the dynamite!

Dude, I am so pumped. This is really going to be a good thing.

As for our industry, I definitely think gyms should increase their rates. I’m a personal trainer and I actually am the highest price trainer in D.C. But the gyms are ridiculously low priced.

Near my folks house in North Carolina there is a huge facility (I forget their name…but it’s not Planet Fitness) that is charging $10 per month for tons of stuff. My brother said two gyms had gone out of business within 6 months of them moving into town. I understand that competition is healthy, but they are destroying other businesses AND more importantly driving the perceived value of fitness lower and lower…which may in the future affect me! Not a good thing.

I’ll call Obama and see what he can do about it, lol.

Great show man. I love what you have to say and I love how you keep it real

How fun! You said you were going to shorten to 12 minutes in future episodes, and I think that is perfect. Because I happened to look up when I felt my attention draining, and it was right at the 12 minute mark. It’s not you, it’s me 🙂

I just created my first animoto video. I sent it to your email so you can see it! I’m going to make one for my dog Daisy too!

I love our industry. This is my 8th year and I’ll be a fitness girl for life. I love helping so many people every day. Yes it gets tiring and yes I wish I could make a bit more money, but how many people wake up at 4:30 in the morning in a good mood? Not many.

I am really excited that you made this show. I kind of wish you’d send one every day.

      Jessie Lynn

    • Brett

Curtis, site looks well. Good format. Wish you much success.

    • Laban

Curtis, Great job on your first show. You know, when I was watching this show you reminded me of “Steve” on Blues Clues. Maybe you need to paint MJ Blue and have him join you on the show… Great job brother.

    • Wil Fleming

Great show Curtis. Glad to see someone being real with the fitness industry, and club/studio owners in particular. Keep it up and I can’t wait for the next episode.

    • Ellen Snyder

      Very good first show Curtis!

I’ve heard you talk about MJ and it’s good to put a face to the puppy! He is very cute!

I don’t know if you’ll read this, but do you know a company that designs the gift cards you referred to?

Thanks for a great resource. I hope everyone knows what a great person you are and how important you are to the industry!

    • Will

Curtis, great show brother. Lot’s of good info. Love the marketing tips. Can’t wait to hear how to run the business better.

Thanks a lot Keep the good stuff coming

    • Ray

Nice job. It looks like you had a lot of fun creating this. Looking forward to more.

    • Curtis,

Awesome first show, thanks for all the help with our facility and helping us dominate our local area.

      Looking forward to next week!

      BJ Bliffert

    • I really apprecieated your show. Watched most of it twice, second time with pen in hand. Thanks for making it available to us.

Waiting with anticipation for Episode 2!

    • Congrats on the first show, Curtis! Did you major in “Sarcasm?” Just kidding, just kidding 😉

Great stuff. For all watching, Curtis is definitely one of the TOP minds in fitness marketing. He knows his stuff inside and out.

      Jim Labadie

    • Great show – I love that you are crude – don’t EVER get rid of it.
      I will be watching.

    • I was a little worried about shouting from the mountaintop how good this was going to be. CRISIS AVERTED! Way to deliver the goods. Can’t wait till next week. BTW, try Handcuffs

    • Shelly

That was great. I want a copy of that picture to put on my refrigerator too!

You are so much more entertaining in person than in your newsletter. Not that I don’t enjoy your newsletter, because I do, I just REALLY like this format and I’m very excited to see what you come up with each week.

Your name gets brought up a lot in our gym. When you recommend a strategy, we do it, most times the same day. The owners love you too. I feel like we know you yet we’ve never met. Thank you for being real and very down to earth. And like the person above said, don’t ever lose that personality. It shines!

    • Brian

Really good job. I still like your shaky flip cam videos, so I hope you keep doing those too 🙂

I’m very happy about this. I’m emailing other trainers I know right now.

    • curtismock

Thanks for all the comments gang! It’s been a lot of fun to create and I’m excited that you like it. It’s going to get better each week!

    • Curtis good stuff buddy. I dig it and will certainly be looking forward to the next show.

    • Eric

I find it interesting, and saddening, that our industry just keeps hurting itself. Lowering prices, poor collection procedures, a lack of attention to members; it’s really sad to me. Every time we do these things we make it harder and harder in the years to come.

Sometimes I feel like we will never be able to make a difference with society, but then I remember that as long as I make a difference in the lives of my members, that is enough to make my life fulfilling. It helps me remember that I don’t have to change the world, I just have to change my world.

You’ve done a great thing with this show and with the platform you’ve created for yourself to spread your gospel. Great job.

    • Elizabeth

I’m proud of you! I know you worked really hard on this show. I was dying when she said she shaves your back because your really hairy. That is hilarious. I’m going to have a lot of fun watching this each week.

      Elizabeth Jordan

    • Awesome Curtis! Look forward to learning more from and will be keeping posted on upcoming episodes. I’ll be sure to pass this along to my client clubs in New Zealand as I know they’ll get some great benefit from tuning in. Well done mate!

    • shawn

      Great job!

I did a direct mailer last year at New Years and it flopped. Maybe you should show examples of what you consider to be a good mailer and a good offer. I don’t think I’m going to risk it again, just because I don’t have anyone to tell me what offer or coupon would be best. just an idea.

I’m excited to see more next week.

    • Nice!

    • Renee Butz

Thank you! This show is the answer to the question “how do you eat an elephant?”

The mini tv show format fits my lifestyle, and attention span, better than trying to get through a pile of industry magazines or other written material.

You are the perfect bite-sized morsel that I need to help me survive year 2 in this crazy, often frustrating, biz!

I was figuring this would be you sitting at your desk on your flip cam. This is a really cool concept! It’s kind of like when I watch Lost though, I’m going to hate that I have to wait a week to see the next show! I’d rather watch right now! You should offer a box set 🙂

I really look forward to seeing the show each week. I hope others embrace this so you keep doing it. I think this will do a lot for a lot of gym owners.

    • Great Job! For those of you playing at home I have the pleasure of working side by side with Curtis on a lot of exciting projects…literally, he’s sitting on the other side of the room right now plotting his world domination.

This TV show has been a bit of a mystery, late night filming sessions, porn stars and UFC fighters walking around our office (kidding) and lots and lots of testing. I’ll admit, I wasn’t the biggest supporter of the concept mostly because I didn’t feel that club owners would pay attention. Well you guys changed my mind. I’m impressed with the comments to say the least.

I promise you that the first show isn’t even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the detailed strategies that Curtis will be sharing with you. Stand by…prepare to have your minds blown

This is really good stuff. I’m a member of GymSuccess, I get your newsletter, pretty much anything you put out there, I take part in. I’m not a stalker or anything, but you put out so much better info than anyone else. I print out your newsletter and other articles and give them to my staff. And they don’t even mind reading it because its not boring stuff. I like to see now that you write the way you talk and vice versa. Its very refreshing that you are a real person. I think you do a great job

I have to disagree with you. I don’t think the low cost models are a very smart idea. As weak as the dollar is right now, what happens when the dollar is worthless (which might happen very soon). By targeting the lower SES (or perhaps simply budget conscious) population, the $10 model will suffer most because they have nothing to offer the people who have actually paid attention to the markets and have more than just money. You wait, in 5 years we’ll end up switching to gold or silver as our main currency.

Keep in mind I am also not a doom and gloomer. I live near the heart of all of this (NYC) and I have seen this all evolving. I don’t know what industry is safe, but I’m certain any business catering to the low end is going to get hurt the most.

    • Carrie Weller

I think there is room in this industry for all business models. The problem is that at each level, most owners are not very good at marketing and growing their business. But I fully believe that we can all exist together. Those that struggle due to competition need to seek help with their business. Maybe they should watch this show 😉

I’ve followed you for about a year now. I’ve never replied to any of your newsletters and I’ve never made a post in GymSuccess. But I watch and listen and learn. But I felt compelled to leave a message since I think you really found a winner in this TV show.

I look forward to future episodes. Thank you for all the information you share with everyone.

      Carrie Weller

    • Great job Curtis! This will be must watch TV for all fitness business owners.

    • FLEX

Nice job Mox. Like the scruff and the cameo by MJ. (What else can I say, I’m not in the fitness industy). I’m proud of you, buddy.

    • Robin

This is awesome! Good production. Glad to see you took the time to do this right. I actually have a degree in video and it’s always nice to see someone do quality work. Don’t see that too often in the fit biz!

And I really liked the Animoto source. I do custom design in Final Cut Pro for any vids I do, but for someone without that software, this is so easy and fast, its a no brainer!

And everything else you said I agree completely with. I just signed up for your newsletter too. Looking forward to more!

    • Curtis you did an awesome job on the first show. I am so excited for you. It is so great to have such a passionate person in the industry so willing to help everyone.

This is not just a great recourse for owner it is great for trainers as well. I have used many of your tips as a trainer and they have all helped my training business.

I have to say that I took one of your tips from your goldmine newsletter and I doubled my clients in the month of November.

I love all the different segments and the outside the box segment for sure. Can’t wait to try the Animoto site to add a slide show to my training site.

Keep up the great work. I am looking forward to the next show. Thanks for taking the time to help the industry, gym owners and training alike. 🙂

    • Sean

Good show, good packaging. I think this is going to be very valuable to the industry.

Hey curtis great show! I agree that 20 minutes might be just a bit outside of my attention span, but 12 or 15 minutes would be perfect.

I liked the background. Looks very “entertainment tonight”. Someone mentioned your hands moving and you made the Ricky Bobby reference, but I have seen a lot of really boring dry show hosts and presenters and I’d rather you move your hands than be boring.

Other than that the content was strong and I’m sure it will get even stronger. I own two womens clubs outside of Boston, so the question and answer was very relevant for me too.

I also agree that the industry has issues, but I feel it is at the individual level. There are well run gyms and there are poorly run gyms. Regardless of location or franchise support, it all comes down to what you do based on your situation. Every club can be successful, and competition is healthy. People just always want to point the blame on the economy and competition and anything but themselves. There was my soapbox too 🙂

      Keep up the good work.

    • Kelly

      Great stuff Curtis!!

I think this “show” is a great opertunity for those who have not had the pleasure to meet you in person and discover how passionate you really are about helping others and the industry, it brings you out (not that your scripts dont but you get the drift right!!)

looking forward to the next show…Keep up the good work.

      Kelly M

    • Great Show!!!

    • I’m glad I had a chance to go back and watch this one.

Good stuff. Love all the tips and will put them to use.

The animoto video making site looks great!

    • Cool first show. I hope that you will also share some non-markting tips about health and fitness. Hearing how other professional explain health and fitness issues can help us improve our client presentations.

      Best Regards,
      Richard Hackworth

    • I have been in desperate need of video editing software. Thanks for the resource.

    • Tom Cepeda

Curtis thanks for the info and humor.

    • Hey Curtis,

Thank you for the blog. Been watching for awhile but just started commenting.

I love the tips regarding competition since new businesses are popping up all the time.

      Thanks again.

    • I love all the resources you are mentioning! Animodo is cool but I prefer imovie for quick video editing—more flexibility and more features. Once you learn it, it is quick and easy.

    • Daniel Finnerty

      Great show Curtis,

I can’t believe that I have know about this so long and waited so long to watch it. I like where our mind is at am I am excited to see the rest of the episodes.

      Live Well,
