NOTE: Hey, it’s Curtis. I’m writing this note from Internet Jail.  It appears I used up too much police_clipart.pngbandwidth, so the web critiques can be viewed by clicking Deputy Dan here.  Watch the show as you normally would and at the end of the show you’ll see a message from Deputy Dan about my “situation”.  But when you want to access the website critiques, just click ole Deputy Dan’s image here.  And on that page, if you click the little icon under the video to play it full screen, you’ll get to watch the HD version of me picking apart everyone’s websites.  Okay, back to scraping out my escape route with a spork…

star_3In this week’s episode I share with you some strategies I learned at the Ryan Lee Continuity Summit in Connecticut, I have a great Killer Resource that allows you to capture images and videos of what you wee on your computer screen, and I’m going to spend some time critiquing a few of the websites you guys submitted.

Websites and Resources Mentioned in the Show:

Need an excuse to make fun of me?  What if I told you I left my sunroof open during a 4 hour torrential downpour?  Think that will give you some ammunition.  I thought so.  Learn my story and feel free to call me an idiot.

Fitness Business Television is now on iTunes!  That’s right…head over to and you can subscribe to the podcast.  This will allow you to automatically download all past and future episodes straight to your ipod or iphone so you don’t have to be on a computer to watch the show!

Who doesn’t want their prospects to find them on the Internet?  I know you, my incredibly loyal and sexy viewers do!  I’ve got a few cool tricks I picked up at an internet marketing conference last week.

This week’s killer resource is one I use almost daily…definitely weekly, and I can’t imagine life without it.  It makes it so incredibly easy for me to capture and save anything on a website that I want to see/use in the future.  It will become one of your favorites too I’m certain.

As always your thoughts are appreciated. Please leave a comment below that will benefit the other viewers AND will get you noticed by Google. Enjoy the show!

      Hey Curtis
Thanks for sharing your tips you picked up at Ryan Lee’s Continuity Summit.

    • Curtis,

Thanks for the great tips! I’ve already made many of the changes you suggested.

The only thing I don’t know how to do is add an image to my AWeber contact form when collecting names and emails.

None of the forms seem to allow me to do that. I’ll have to contact AWeber and see if they can help unless you know an easy way to add an image to the form.

      Thanks again!

      • It’s not created within your email autoresponder program…it is created within the code of your website. Your programmer can position the image right next to your opt in form. All the opt in form is is the two fields and code that activates your email responder. You can do anything you want around those fields. You just have your web guy create a cool ebook cover, maybe a curvy arrow and a “Free Report” or similar headline, and they put it into your web code near the opt in fields.

    • Great Stuff Curtis!

    • Christy

Hope you get out of jail soon Curtis! That was very cute. I’m sure you did it because of some technicial issue, but it was cute anyway.

I got some great tips from the first critique. Question: do I lose google traffic if I redesign my website? Like will they stop ranking me for my keywords because the site is now “new”?

      • It’s possible. But it shouldn’t take you long to get ranked again if you design your website well, have solid keywords in all the right places, post a few videos, press releases, and articles to your site, submit it to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and DMOZ (see episode 6 for the links: )

It will take you less than a week to get ranked again…

    • Hi Curtis,
Nothing happens when I click on Deputy Dan’s picture. What am I doing wrong?

    • Hi Curtis,
Never mind, I clicked on the itunes and got it to show up. Thanks for the critique. Very helpful suggestions. A little overwhelming, but very helpful. Really appreciate your time and effort!

    • @Christy

I just moved my site to a new host and format a couple of weeks ago and am already being found again from Google links. If you’ve wrote articles for websites and your web address has changed, go back and change the link at the bottom of the articles that you previously wrote. One thing that really helped my site get found more was a solid tag line after the main title of my website.

One other feature I found that is helpful is if you have an events calendar on your page keep it loaded full of the events happening at your facility and in your community. People will search events that may or may not be related to your club, but chances are they live in the area. When you have a link for the “Tampa Area Relay for Life” on your calendar you will probably have one of the top rankings for that event, especially if you live in a smaller area. This will drive more traffic to your site and people will see you as an active member of the community.

So Curtis what do you do if your web designer is MIA? I had my website designed by a guy. It’s not good. In fact I’m not even going to tell you where it is because you’ll make fun of it HA!

But seriously, he’s gone. No phone number, email, return address. Gone. How do I start from scratch? Can I hire a new person and can they have access to make changes to the website? Or did that guy have the original files necessary to make changes?

Since the website sucks anyway, should I just start from scratch and get a completely different website? Budget is tight and if I can get a “redesign” vs a regular start from scratch design, it seems it would be a little more budget friendly.

      Thanks for your advice

    • Curtis,

Another great show. I cannot express the importance of a solid website in any fitness business. Did you know that the latest numbers are that 56% of consumers research a purchase online before buying?

Jing is also a valuable time saver, I use it almost everyday.

    • Curtis,

ok I’m licking my wounds and swallowing my pride on vacation in Hawaii. I was pleased with my website because a member who needed help did it free on a trade. He’s a great guy and it’ll be tough to swap it out, but we will. Ironically, we get 5 -10 memers a month from it but I guess with improvements we should expect even more!!

If I go to 99designs and post a project, do you have any tips on on things I need to tell them to make sure they don’t make the same mistakes made in the past with our website?  I was thinking of giving
Them a link to your critique as part of the process but I doubt they need that.

Thanks again for the great resources and coaching.

P.S. Our DM campaign with went very well too. Looking forward to the next succesful project.

    • Curtis,

I love it when you go to conferenceses. You pay all the fees and we get all the tips for free. It is very nice to know that we have some one like you in our corner.:) Not very many people care if others have success, but you go out of your way to help others. It does not go unnoticed. Thank you very much.:)

The tips in this weeks show were great. I can’t wait to use the jing project and get some good articels from the public domains.

I look forward to hear the new tips for facebooks. Thanks again for all your time and effort you put in the show.

to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.

working with? I’m going to start my own blog in the near
future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.

The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most
blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.

    • Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the
screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I
figured I’d post to let you know. The style and design look
great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon.
      Thanks plenty of fish natalielise
