star_3In this week’s episode I’m going to share with you how to reach prospects who speak a different language, I’ve got a killer resource that allows you to post coupon codes for your fitness business online (and it gets noticed by Google), and I share with you three powerful tips to generate more referrals

Websites and Resources Mentioned in the Show:

Teaser:  This show has a killer peanut butter ice cream recipe that you just can’t miss!

With the huge influx of Hispanics into many cities, many of us will need to learn at least basic Spanish.  Some of us will find ourselves right in the middle of predominant Hispanic population and will see a niche that needs filled.  Learn how to market to the spanish speaking population, or any non native English speaking populations near you.

The killer resource this week is beneficial both from a business standpoint and a personal standpoint.  Your business will benefit from the exposure of having a coupon online, but you will benefit by saving money on items you regularly purchase.

Referral programs don’t always end up as successful as you had hoped.  I share three reasons why that is, and I share the steps you need to take to make sure the foundation for a successful referral program is in place before you even begin promoting the program.

As always your thoughts are appreciated.  Please leave a comment below that will benefit the other viewers.

    • “Hola. Rapido por favor?”

      Vato Loco!

One thing I’ve noticed from many people in the Hispanic culture is they love soap operas. (I know I shouldn’t make broad generalizations about cultures. I’m just trying to be helpful and give suggestions.) You could try to advertise using a radio spot, or some other media spoofing the soap opera format, while plugging your business.

Great mention of Retail Me Not. It is a great website we’ve used many times.

    • You are so funny, I must be crazy b/c I really look forward to watching your show every Wed. Not only for the great tips but you are just so funny and I love to end my day watching the show.

I think I will have to try the ice cream. Not sure if I can get over the cottage cheese in my ice cream but I will try it.

I hope that you were able to get your coffee. LOL

I will have to go try the Retail me not site. That is a great way to get clients. I may try to put a coupon for a free training session to get more people in the doors of the gym.

      Can’t wait for next week.

Great tips this week Curtis! keep up the good work. I couldn’t agree more about referrals. You will get 0% of the things you do not ask for. One of my favorite questions at the point of sale is:

“As part of your membership here, you may bring an new guest once a month for free. If you have someone in mind and give me their name and number i will upgrade them to a 2 week pass absolutely free. who do you have in mind?”

    • Curtis, do you think a multipurporse club can survive by still selling one year memberships? My club still does this and the other option would be 3 months. Exceptions are made from time to time but we still push for the 12 month contracts.

    • Eric

Got my coupon on retail me not!

Great show this week. I actually live in an area where to the west of us is a large middle eastern population. They have money, I just haven’t tried targeting them specifically. I got some good ideas from your spanish niche that I plan to use. Thanks again.

    • Roger Davis

Nice job. Our gym is in an area that has a large population of hispanics. I actually hired a bilingual front desk person who is active in that community. Best thing I ever did. If Alfredo doesn’t have time to get involved in the activities of that community, he needs to hire someone who will. I’ll bet 20% of our memberships and 40% of our referrals have now come from spanish speaking members.

And just to kill any stereotypes, the hispanics we have attracted are not the pant sagging wife beater types you see on TV lol. Our hispanic members have a checking account, understand our dress code, and have the highest amount of respect for the equipment and other members. And I rarely have a delinquent draft from them. They are very responsible.

      Just an FYI !!

First off, what would the Fitness Industry do with out you?!

Alfredo touched on very good question. There are lots of communities with foreign speaking members that are not targeted as clients because of the language barrier. This is an untapped niche for many and its best to jump on board before others do. A language barrier should not stop us from seeking out members, learning the basics is fairly simple and most of those who speak a foriegn language and live here are striving to learn our language and what better way to learn than with someone who is teaching them to take better care of their bodies. Its a mutually beneficial relationship. Even if you decide to hire a bilingual sales person it would benefit you to learn at least the basics of the language for those you are targeting, even just to be able to speak to them out of courtesy.

Thanks for another great episode Curtis.

    • Reaching the hispanic population can be tricky. You’re right. They like relationship marketing and they do business with people they trust. Depending on the SES of the area, many prefer to pay in cash. To the west of our gym we have a large population of lower SES hispanics. They come in with a fistfull of cash and we turn them away. I choose not to run a cash based gym. I have no problem with any other races joining (I’m half Japanese), it’s just the fact that I’m the owner and I can choose to do business or not do business with people who do not have a bank account. It’s that simple.

But that being said, to the east of us is a large population of hispanics that live in higher end homes and HAVE bank accounts. They have no issues coming in to join. And I market to them no differently. I would guess I’m missing out on many who don’t speak fluent english, but for the most part all of the hispanics to the east understand english. So I’m not in the same situation as you, but I understand the situation.

    • Jamie Jeffries

Your hair is much better in this one than in episode 14 lol.

    • Sharon

I tried the ice cream and it is great! I can’t say the same for the peas and peanut butter omelet you mentioned in the other episode though. I don’t think I’m that brave.

But the prograde icecream was the perfect treat I’ve been looking for so thank you.

    • The Prograde Ice Cream recipe needs one thing in my opinion – some sort of sweetener like Splenda, Lo-Han, Xylitol or Truvia.

It’s a good recipe, but it just needs a little something to sweeten it up a bit and make it taste just right.

I’ve used RetailMeNot before, but never thought about using it for my own business. Great tip! I’ll be doing this for my business.

I’m just now catching up on episodes (as you can tell by the date of this post, I’m four months behind!). But I’m going to knock out a bunch of them today.

By the way, great meeting you at Bootcamp Bootcamp!

Good luck with the move to Cali.
